From CUBA- 5 leading global media organizations urged that the US end the prosecution of Julian Assange- the publications include the NYT, the Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, and El Pais published a joint letter insisting that the survival of a free press in a democratic future is at stake. A second partial agreement was signed in Mexico that will allow some of the US seized Venezuelan money to be used for relief and education in Venezuela at the discretion of a UN group.
 
From FRANCE-- French President Macron is meeting with Joe Biden as I produce this show- one of the topics will be how liquified gas shipped from the US to Europe has a 500% increase in price  by the time it reaches consumers over there. European nations are also disturbed by the subsidies Biden proposed for electric vehicles only if they are made in the US, which is not allowed by the WTO.
 
From GERMANY- Delegates from around the world are meeting in Uruguay to create an internationally binding treaty to drastically reduce the use of plastic, which has direct damage to the environment as well as contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, was banned from a summit in Poland of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)- Lavrov gave a press conference but no international broadcasters allowed in the US carried his criticisms. Following local elections, the Taiwanese President resigned as leader of her political party.
 
From JAPAN- Several reports on the protests in China over Covid lockdowns, and the easing of restrictions. US officials are upset by an increase in Chinese nuclear weapon development. Canada revealed new security investments in the Indo-Pacific region. Russia and the US delayed talks on nuclear arms reduction. There is an international conference on bioweapons underway in  Switzerland.

From GERMANY- At the UN Climate Conference, or COP 27, a deal was reached to create a fund to help developing countries with the devastating effects of climate change, mainly caused by richer nations- the details of who will pay and how much have not been established. And there was almost no progress on reducing carbon or the phasing out of fossil fuels. The deadly crackdown on protests in Iran is getting attention from the UN.
 
From JAPAN-- Japanese Defense forces launched a new interceptor missile from off the coast of Hawaii on Monday. US VP Harris and Philippine President Marcos discussed adding 5 US military bases in the country, despite the Philippine constitution banning foreign bases. The UN Security Council discussed the latest North Korean intercontinental missile launch- North Korea says it is a response to increased US sanctions and military activity in the area. In Taiwan significant local elections are being held this Saturday.
 
From CUBA- Brazilian President-elect Lule da Silva visited Portugal and warned that Bolsonaro's right-wing supporters remain a threat to peace. Three years ago there were massacres in Bolivia following a coup that ousted Evo Morales- it was led by Jeanine Anez and there have been no charges brought forward for the murders.
 
From FRANCE- Hebe de Bonafini, one of the founders of Mothers of The Plaza de Mayo in Argentina passed away this week. The UK Supreme Court ruled that the people of Scotland cannot hold a referendum on independence. In Brazil Bolsonaro was rejected in his that election results be in validated.

From CUBA-- More than 600 delegates to COP 27 are affiliated with the fossil fuel industry, who are pushing for new oil and gas development on the African continent. Europe is looking at replacing Russian gas and oil supplies with rapid development in Africa, claiming the goal is to aid the impoverished people in the region. US occupation forces in Syria with Kurdish allies have reportedly looted another 94 tankers of oil and wheat, illegally transporting them to US bases in Iraq. Iran is assisting Venezuela in repairing its oil refineries and supplying fuel and tankers for exporting its crude oil.
 
From JAPAN- At the G20 summit in Bali Joe Biden had a meeting with Chinese President Xi, finding ways to get their relationship back on track. Experts from the IAEA are inspecting a planned release into the Pacific Ocean of radioactively contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The head of NATO says that the missile that killed two people in Poland was likely fired by Ukraine, but placed the blame on Russia.
 
From FRANCE- Coca-Cola retained its title as the worst plastic polluter of the year, while being an official sponsor of COP 27. Then press reviews on the world human population reaching an estimated 8 billion, and the meeting of Presidents Biden and Xi at the G20 summit in Bali.

From FRANCE- The UN Conference on Climate Change, COP 27, was a major topic in the international press. There were several days with speeches by world leaders- notably discussed was the drought in East Africa, the rising sea levels affecting small island nations, and reparation for loss and damage for countries that pollute very little. The Middle East has seen temperatures rising twice as fast as the rest of the world. Then a press review from Ukraine on the climate impact of war and military operations.
 
From GERMANY-- The World Meteorological Organization published its annual report showing that the past 8 years have been the warmest on record, driven by record levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
 
From CUBA- Venezuelan President Maduro has proposed to Colombia and Brazil a South American summit for the defense of the Amazon, to try to reverse the intense destruction of the past few years. At the COP 27 summit Maduro said that there needed to be a change in the consumerist model which has evolved climate change into the possible collapse of the entire ecosystem. African leaders pointed out that they are unable to afford the cost of adapting to the impact of the climate crisis. A group of small island nations has joined a call for a windfall tax on oil companies to compensate for induced natural disasters. Just Stop Oil protestors in England have been stopping traffic around London. The Iranian President addressed Joe Biden's comment on the need to free the country. The UN General Assembly again voted to end the US blockade of Cuba.
 
From JAPAN- New Covid cases are rising sharply in Japan. North Korea slammed South Korea for this week's joint military operation with the US, saying it is a preparation for invasion. Several Japanese corporations have begun trials at thermal power plants using ammonia which does not emit carbon dioxide.

From JAPAN- In South Korea over 150 people were crushed to death at a crowded street party in Seoul. Then several reports on the increasingly dangerous military actions in the Koreas- the week began with the North warning the South and the US to cease their joint military drills. The South joined in launching missiles and the US announced an extension of the military drills.
 
From CUBA- After 20 years without being charged, a Pakistani businessman has been released from Guantanamo Bay prison. The European Parliament has banned the sale of gasoline and diesel cars and vans by 2035. 5 former European Foreign ministers published an open letter accusing Israeli policies against Palestinians as a crime of apartheid- the UN says it will investigate the charges.

The International Energy Agency, the IEA, says global emissions should peak by 2025 with strong development of renewable energy sources, spurned on by rising prices for fossil fuels- a German analyst discusses how big a change needs to occur by 2030 and that more nuclear power plants will not be part of the solution.
 
From CUBA- The Colombian Senate has approved parts of a bill by President Gustavo Petro that intends to create a total peace policy in the country. Amnesty International has called on the International Criminal Court, the ICC, to investigate possible war crimes during Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in August. The state of New Jersey is suing  5 oil and gas companies and a lobbying group for lying about harm caused by fossil fuels. A Viewpoint on this Sunday's Presidential election in Brazil.

Rescue operations continue in Venezuela in the region destroyed by a landslide after days of extreme rainfall. A new US report warns that 69% of tracked animal species have declined since 1970.
 
From JAPAN- Mayors from across the globe spent two days in Hiroshima discussing peace and ways to persuade governments to abandon nuclear weapons. South Korean and US military troops are doing ground drills, while the North fired more missiles as a counter measure. The protests in Iran over the death of Masha Amini in police custody continue after a month, with over a hundred Iranian citizens killed in clashes.

From JAPAN- Negotiators from the IAEA and Iran have started talks over the Iranian nuclear program, but conflicts over the veracity of US evidence have held back progress. At the UN, the North Korean ambassador has condemned joint military exercises by the US and South Korea as an intentional provocation of war. German fighter jets performed military drills with Japanese fighter jets. More details on the missile launchings by North Korea coinciding with the visit by VP Kamala Harris to South Korea- in Japan, Harris blasted China and pledged support for Taiwan separatists.

Also at the UN, the PM of St. Vincent and the Grenadines spoke to resolving geo-political conflicts at a time of escalating aggressions.
