From JAPAN- Japan and NATO have agreed to raise cooperation to "maintain a free and open international order." In Pakistan a suicide bomber killed over 100 people in a mosque mainly occupied by police who were the intended victims. A military facility in Iran was attacked by 3 drones which US officials attributed to Israel.
 
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin spoke with Noam Chomsky, famed American linguist and scholar. In this excerpt Noam discusses current examples of manufacturing consent in regard to the wars in Iraq and Ukraine. He goes on to use the undersea bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline, delivering gas from Russia to Germany- pointing out that the main stream media accused Russia of the explosion and then not investigating the evidence. He goes on to explain why Europe is now in the pocket of the US, much to their own detriment.
 
From GERMANY- German Chancellor Scholz traveled to meet with Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Scholz asked Lula to provide ammunition for the tanks Germany is sending to Ukraine and Lula refused, saying that he would be willing to negotiate peace in that region along with Chinese President Xi.
 
From CUBA- An update on the continuing massive protests in Peru, including polls with show overwhelming popular support for fresh elections this year. Israeli forces continue killing Palestinians in the West Bank, and plans were announced to supply firearms to Israeli citizens.

From GEORGE GALLOWAY- George spoke with American journalist Chris Hedges about the impact the German and American tanks will make in the war in Ukraine. Chris says that more weapons will not resolve the devastation in Ukraine, but will serve the US military industrial complex . He says that endless war has become the primary business of the American empire, and that the few politicians who speak out against the war industry are erased, like Dennis Kucinich. George and Chris both complain that anyone who tries to oppose the current wars will be cancelled.
 
From FRANCE- First some international press reviews on the agreement to send US and German tanks to Ukraine. NGOs in Ukraine are calling for the firing of the Defense Minister whose office is accused of signing a contract to overpay $200 million for food for the armed forces. In Peru, after scores of civilians protesting the replacement president have been murdered by police and military, the OAS (the Organization of American States) has given the president its full support. CELAC (the Community of Latin American and  Caribbean States) is meeting in Argentina.
 
From CUBA- At the CELAC summit Colombian President Petro spoke to the integration of projects among the member states, and work together like the EU. Venezuelan President Maduro called on the other nations to join against foreign intervention. There is an international call to release 5 water defenders in El Salvador. Canada announced it will pay more than $2 billion Canadian to settle a lawsuit over indigenous residential schools. Large protests against Netanyahu in Israel continue.

From FRANCE- In the French press there has been a controversial push to begin building new nuclear reactors. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, 200 millionaires signed an open letter to world leaders saying that the extreme wealth gap and growing poverty could be in part remedied by taxing the ultra rich. An Oxfam spokesperson describes the need for politicians to act now.
 
From GERMANY- Also at Davos, the charity Oxfam presented a report called Survival of the Richest, explaining the shift in global wealth, and the expansion of absolute poverty around the globe. A series of reports on the protests against coal mining in Luetzerath, Germany. Over the weekend over 35,000 citizens moved into the area and, after several days, police began chasing and beating them, sending scores to hospitals with serious injuries. Protests are also occurring in Davos where Greta Thunberg and other activists spoke out against fossil fuel expansion.
 
From CUBA- In Peru, despite a declared state of emergency, the protests demanding a fresh election continue. Over 100K Israelis marched in major cities in opposition to Netanyahu and the far right power hold in the country. The UK is rewriting laws which will allow police to stop protests before they get started and using guerrilla tactics like glue. In Brazil, the former Minister of Justice under Bolsonaro was arrested upon his return from Florida where he went with the former president.
 
From JAPAN- China accused the US and Japan of hyping up the nuclear threat from China. The governor of Fukushima is on a public relations tour of the US as preparations are finalized to release radioactively contaminated waste water into the Pacific Ocean. Putin spoke by phone to Erdogan of Turkey who wants to mediate peace talks with Ukraine.

From FRANCE- French President Macron has announced an unpopular plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64- how does this compare to other European nations, and general strikes have already been announced. In Peru the military and police have continued murdering citizens protesting the Congress which ousted President Castillo- a review of the Peruvian press. Then a review of the Brazilian and international press on the aftermath of the storming of the government buildings. Young Israelis are protesting in the streets against Netanyahu and his right wing government.
 
From GERMANY- It has been announced that the head of one of the world's largest oil companies will be the president of this year's UN climate talks, COP28. In Luetzerath Germany Police are forcibly removing hundreds of climate activists attempting to prevent the enlargement of a coal mining operation.
 
From CUBA- Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua, has warned about the expansion of fascism in various parts of the world, most recently Brazil. There were large pro-democratic demonstrations in many parts of Brazil, in opposition to the Bolsonarista insurrection.
 
From JAPAN- Japan is in its 8th wave of Covid infections, with more than 10,000 deaths in the past month. Japan and the UK have signed a military pact that Britain called the most significant agreement between them in a century. Japan and the US say they are reorganizing and expanding their military cooperation. South Korea will be holding nuclear war simulations with the US.

        In today’s edition you’ll hear reports from RDW, RHC, and NHK Japan.
         We will begin with Germany’s RDW. 2022 was the hottest year on record in the UK. Many European countries are reporting record high January temperatures, and DW did a series of stories as a forecast for what may be coming. Starting with a review of 2022, pointing out the human effect on various weather events and efforts to limit the carbon emissions. The number of people demonstrating for direct environmental action has risen in Europe. The warming in Central Europe has resulted in almost no snow in the mountains. The US State department joined others in criticizing a provocative visit by a far right Israeli  minister to one of Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious sites, while the government unveiled a plan to weaken the powers of the Israeli Supreme Court. In Peru anti-government protests resumed. RDW

More on the strikes continuing in Peru after the ouster of President Castillo. Newly inaugurated Brazilian President Lula da Silva revoked many of the decrees that had been signed by Bolsonaro. US weapons sales have shown a drastic increase as a result of the war in Ukraine, nearly doubling in 2022. The number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in 2022 was the highest since 2005. RHC

The US announced more military exercises with Japan and South Korea, welcoming the expanded Japanese military strategy. Russia warned the Japanese PM against its revised and growing militarization. From GERMANY- 2022 was a year where extreme weather events became quite common, right up to the devastating blizzard in North America- but can the deadly snowstorm be attributed to the climate change caused by human activity? The EU has imposed a windfall tax on oil companies for excess profits, and now Exxon is suing the EU to avoid the tax. Spain passed a 10 billion Euro economic aid package to help ordinary citizens struggling under inflation.
 
From JAPAN- Taiwan is stepping up its military affiliation with Japan, extending its mandatory conscription to a year,  and accepted $10 billion in US military assistance over the next 5 years. China announced new military drills to express dissatisfaction with US interference in Taiwan. South Korea says drones from the North entered their airspace. 3 Russian military personnel died from Ukrainian drones on a Russian airbase 500 km from the border of eastern Ukraine. China will lessen some travel restrictions under a new Covid policy.
 
From CUBA- Deforestation in the Amazon basin nearly doubled under President Bolsonaro, mostly on indigenous lands. A London based Christian organization calculated the cost of disasters caused by human effects on the climate in 2022. Syrian government troops confronted a US military convoy that has recently protected 95 oil tankers stealing oil into Iraq.
 
From GEORGE GALLOWAY- Johnny Miller is a UK reporter who has been living in eastern Ukraine. He says that Ukraine forces are killing Ukrainian civilians in that region and it is not reported- he quotes Noam Chomsky and John Pilger who say that there is more propaganda in this war than any other modern conflict.

From FRANCE- The UN COP 15 Biodiversity Summit in Montreal concluded with an agreement to protect 30% of the planet by 2030 was applauded and criticized. A conservation researcher says that the rights of the indigenous peoples of the world as caretakers of their own lands were not protected. Many of those lands are being mined, deforested, or have become biofuel plantations. Benjamin Netanyahu has announced a coalition that critics call the most far-right government in the country's history.
 
From JAPAN- A report on how Japan is moving away from its pacifist constitution. North Korea denounced the Japanese move to potentially launch pre-emptive strikes against other countries. A high court in Britain has ruled that the plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is lawful.
 
From CUBA- Bolivian President Arce met with  a Wikileaks delegation and supported the freedom and withdrawal of charges against Julian Assange. In Peru the military and police have killed 24 civilians demanding general elections and the freeing of former President Castillo. Relatives of the 24 victims marched with their coffins to town squares calling for the resignation of Dina Boluarte and new elections. Mexico granted political asylum to the family of Pedro Castillo. UN Secretary general Guterres announced a no-nonsense climate in September 2023, because governments have failed to bring down emissions.
 
From GERMANY- The Dutch Prime Minister apologized for his country's role in slavery, admitting it was a crime against humanity. A campaigner from St. Martin, a former Dutch colony in the Caribbean Sea, explains why she rejects the apology.

From GEORGE GALLOWAY-  George speaks with Scott Ritter, former US Marine Intelligence officer and United Nations weapons inspector who warned Congress that there were no WMDs in Iraq. He talks about US and NATO weapons sent to Ukraine to fight Russia- NATO countries have depleted their defense stocks, and criminal elements in the Ukrainian military have been selling many deadly armaments to terrorists in other countries.
 
From GERMANY- Polls show that only 40% of Europeans are in favor of continuing financial support for Ukraine’s military efforts. The European Union has faced many crises in 2022 and a corruption scandal in the European Parliament has led to serious reflection by EU leaders.

From GERMANY- In Germany dozens were arrested in raids across the country, believed to be members of a far-right movement, the Reich Citizens, accused of plotting to overthrow the government. Pedro Castillo, Leftist Peruvian president, was arrested on charges of rebellion and conspiracy, after being ousted by Congress. Israeli troops killed 3 Palestinians suspected of being terrorists. 2021 global arms sales reached $592 billion, with $300 billion to the US, $100 billion to China, and $17 billion to Russia.
 
From JAPAN- The Japanese government has agreed again to increase spending on defense, this time by 50% over the next five years. The US and Australian governments pledged to increase military spending and US troop presence in the Indo-Pacific region. Russian president Putin says that there nuclear weapons are strictly for defense, and then criticized the US for its large number of nuclear weapons located in Europe- Ukraine denies drone missile attacks far across the border into Russia. South Korean and US forces have continued launching missiles at border units into the buffer zone, which the North Koreans responded to with 130 missiles. Lawmakers in Indonesia have approved a criminal code banning sex outside of marriage and unmarried couples living together.
 
From CUBA- Australian PM Albanese has been attempting to get the US to drop espionage charges filed against Julian Assange. There were large protests in Italy against inflation and the shipping of weapons and money to Ukraine. The US celebrated its latest stealth bomber, the B21, capable of delivering nuclear weapons with or without a crew on board- the Air Force plans to buy 100 B21s for $700 million per plane.¡FurthuR! From CUBA- 5 leading global media organizations urged that the US end the prosecution of Julian Assange- the publications include the NYT, the Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, and El Pais published a joint letter insisting that the survival of a free press in a democratic future is at stake. A second partial agreement was signed in Mexico that will allow some of the US seized Venezuelan money to be used for relief and education in Venezuela at the discretion of a UN group.
 
From FRANCE-- French President Macron is meeting with Joe Biden as I produce this show- one of the topics will be how liquified gas shipped from the US to Europe has a 500% increase in price  by the time it reaches consumers over there. European nations are also disturbed by the subsidies Biden proposed for electric vehicles only if they are made in the US, which is not allowed by the WTO.
 
From GERMANY- Delegates from around the world are meeting in Uruguay to create an internationally binding treaty to drastically reduce the use of plastic, which has direct damage to the environment as well as contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, was banned from a summit in Poland of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)- Lavrov gave a press conference but no international broadcasters allowed in the US carried his criticisms. Following local elections, the Taiwanese President resigned as leader of her political party.
 
From JAPAN- Several reports on the protests in China over Covid lockdowns, and the easing of restrictions. US officials are upset by an increase in Chinese nuclear weapon development. Canada revealed new security investments in the Indo-Pacific region. Russia and the US delayed talks on nuclear arms reduction. There is an international conference on bioweapons underway in  Switzerland.
