From JAPAN- Japanese leaders say that international tension is at the highest point since WW2- Japan will spend over $300 billion on the military over the next 5 years. The plan to build a new US military base in Okinawa, rejected by local citizens, has been forced by the Japanese Supreme Court. A UN Relief agency has called on the international community to help resolve the Israel Palestine conflict.
From FRANCE- The EU has gotten closer to reaching a deal on refugees and migrants. Voting is underway on a referendum in Australia on formally recognizing the indigenous population in the constitution, and create a so-called Voice to Parliament. This would only be an advisory body on matters related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, but there is growing opposition among the white population, especially the older, rural voters. October 14th is the final day for voting.
From CUBA- The ninth meeting of the Puebla group has been held where leaders from 18 Latin American and Caribbean nations met to discuss multilateralism, the climate change crisis, and regional unity in the face of an emerging multipolar global order. A large strike is underway in Guatemala calling for the resignation of the Attorney General and other government officials for election irregularities. In Madrid there is a summit of energy ministers and climate leaders prior to the COP 28 Climate summit- they are agreeing to stick to the Paris agreements which are currently not being achieved. Massive peaceful protests against fossil fuels have continued in the Netherlands, over 6000 people have been arrested. Canadian PM Trudeau formally apologized for the standing ovation given in Parliament for a Canadian Ukrainian citizen who was a member of an SS Nazi unit during WW2. Qatar has called for Israeli nuclear facilities to be subjected to IAEA safeguards, and for Israel to join the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty).

From GERMANY- 6 young people from Portugal are suing the EU, at the European Court of Human Rights. They accuse the EU and 30 individual countries of inaction on the climate crisis, violating their human rights. This follows a similar youth lawsuit in Montana, where the court agreed that the state was not protecting them when it supported fossil fuels development.
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin speaks with Alastair Crooke, a former British diplomat and founder of the Lebanon based Conflicts Forum, an organization that advocates for engagement between political Islam and the West. He talks about Zelensky's recent trip to the UN General Assembly and how the US is becoming isolated in its admiration. Also the growth of deep divisions among NATO countries, and Ukrainian anger as US support begins to dwindle.
From CUBA- The Venezuelan Foreign Minister says the US intends to build a military base on disputed land bordering Venezuela and Guyana, to begin taking oil from the region. President Maduro of Venezuela spoke at the latest BRICS plus forum, encouraging the de-dollarization of international trade.
From JAPAN- North Korea expelled the US soldier who sought refuge in their country. Russia is considering joining China is stopping the import of Japanese seafood potentially contaminated by radioactive waste discharge at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Japanese nuclear industry is finding it difficult to find a place for its radioactive waste. South Korea help its a military parade in Seoul for the first time in 10 years. At the UN General Assembly in NY North Korea denounced the new military alliance between South Korea, Japan, and the US.

From JAPAN- The governor of Okinawa is looking for international allies to help stop the relocation of a US military facility in the prefecture. Chinese imports of Japanese seafood fell by two thirds last month due to the Fukushima waste water dumping into the Pacific Ocean. The Japanese embassy in Washington hosted a Fukushima fish fest for members of the US Congress. The government of Thailand is set to reverse its decision which has allowed recreational use of cannabis. An international research group says the heavy rain that triggered a horrific flood in Libya was the result of climate change. Climate activists demanding reductions in fossil fuel use spray painted the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
From CUBA- 75,000 people rallied in New York City, calling for urgent action against climate change ahead of the opening of the UN General Assembly. Police arrested at least 149 climate activists who had peacefully disrupted New York city's financial district. Luis Arce, president of Bolivia, spoke at the UN saying that the international arms race must be curtailed and that dialogue and diplomacy must be prioritized.
From GERMANY- World leaders met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly for a special summit on climate ambitions- only nations bringing new and meaningful action were allowed to speak- the US and China were silenced. An activist working with Brazil and the EU gives her analysis of the summit. Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the murder of a Sikh leader in British Columbia.
From FRANCE- At the G77 plus China summit in Cuba, the UN Secretary General Guterres stated that the world is failing developing countries. The Governor of California announced a state lawsuit against 5 major oil companies. From GERMANY- The first African Climate Summit was held in Kenya, with nations calling on wealthy nations to assist them in developing a green economy. They also discussed adapting to the changing climate, conserving natural resources, and getting beyond endless debt. The African continent is experiencing the most extreme climate change while only contributing 3% to the man made sources of global warming. Part of the final declaration calls for a global carbon tax regime, and to reform the international financial institutions. Activists called carbon credits a get out of jail free card for the worlds biggest polluters. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled that abortion is not a crime, requiring all federal health care services to offer abortions to anyone requesting one.
From FRANCE- First a press review on the probability that the next president of Mexico will be a woman, then a headline that Europe is experiencing its hottest summer in 120,000 years. As Russian natural gas stopped flowing into most of Europe, the US rapidly began developing routes of LNG or propane tankers to fill the void. There are 7 LNG terminals in the US with 15 more being developed. 79% of American LNG comes from fracking, a technique banned in several European countries.
From CUBA- Chile will host a 50th anniversary of the US backed coup that took place September 11th, 1973- most Latin American and many global leaders will attend. Demonstrators took to the streets of Guatemala to prevent a coup led by the attorney general and several judges against Bernardo Arevalo, the president-elect of the country. Colombian President Gustavo Petro says the right wing opposition and wealthy Spanish businessmen are planning to overthrow him. Tens of thousands protestors converged outside a French military base in Niger, demanding that the soldiers leave the country. Remnants of cluster bombs killed 37 civilians in Yemen last month, despite a truce being in effect since April.

From GERMANY- In Gabon the military seized power immediately after the re-election of president Ali Bongo, bringing to 8 the number of African countries who have experienced a coup since 2020- what is the common thread in these upheavals? Drones from Ukraine continue to attack Russian territory.
From CUBA- Brazilian President Lula da Silva declared that the expansion of the BRICS economic group from 5 nations to 11, saying that it will have more power than the G-7. The Chilean government has launched a national search plan for those disappeared during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, which began on September 11, 1973. In Haiti at least 7 protestors were gunned down by gangs.
From JAPAN- The Japanese government says it will support its fisheries in the face of China and other countries refusing to import products due to the ongoing dumping of radioactive waste water into the Pacific Ocean- US Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, declared the fish to be safe to eat. China condemned a new US military aid package to Taiwan. The US has approved the sale of long-range missiles to Japan. At the UN, Tuesday was the international day against testing nuclear weapons. A group of Japanese companies are developing non-petroleum based drink bottles.

From FRANCE- France is experiencing a serious heatwave, unusual for this late in the year, causing agricultural disruptions. At the BRICS summit in South Africa, six nations have been added to the roster of emerging nations- Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. BRICS plus 6 nations include 35% of global GDP and 46% of the world population. Japanese citizens protested outside the Prime Ministers house as TEPCO, the company that owns the Fukushima nuclear power plant, begins dumping more than a million tons of radioactive waste water into the Pacific Ocean.
From JAPAN- More on the start of the treated radioactive waste water being dumped into the Pacific Ocean from Fukushima, which is expected to continue for 30 years. South Korea, China, and other neighboring nations consider the action a threat to their citizens and demanded a halt to the release. Japanese citizens are filing a lawsuit to cease the dump, and China and Hong Kong are banning fishery imports from the region. Last week the leaders of Japan, South Korea, and the US met in Washington to form a trilateral agreement on military cooperation. US and South Korean forces began a new series of military drills. The Central American Parliament has decided to remove Taiwan as an observer nation, replacing it with China.
From CUBA- In a referendum sponsored by indigenous people and environmentalists, Ecuador voted to block oil extraction from its land in the Amazon watershed. The Netherlands and Denmark said they will gift f-16s to Ukraine- the Netherlands has been trying to sell them to Argentina for several years, and both European nations want to upgrade to f-35s. Supporters of Julian Assange gathered outside US Attorney General Merrick Garland’s house, asking him to drop the charges and extradition process.

From JAPAN- The Japanese Prime Minister is meeting with the presidents of the US and South Korea in Washington, discussing Indo-Pacific security and the dumping of Fukushima waste water into the Pacific Ocean. The US soldier who fled into North Korea is seeking asylum. The WTO ruled against Chinese retaliatory tariffs on US imports.
From GERMANY- Russia hosted an international security conference in Moscow, attended by 800 delegates from 76 countries, including the new Chinese Defense Minister, India, and Brazil. Putin led off accusing the West of fueling unrest around the world. Western nations did not attend, and the Western media barely reported the conference.
From GALLOWAY- George speaks with Scott Ritter, former US Marine Intelligence officer and United Nations weapons inspector who warned Congress that there were no WMDs in Iraq. Scott talks about why the colonial past led some African countries trusted the Wagner Group. He also talks about how a negotiated settlement in Ukraine will be portrayed in Western media, and the greed of weapons manufacturers exploiting the US budget.
From CUBA- The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities in Ecuador blame conservative president Lasso for the increased violence in the country, including the assassination of a Presidential candidate last week. This week another political leader in Ecuador was murdered. Venezuela won a legal battle to recover $1.5 billion that had been confiscated by a Portuguese/American bank. Venezuelan President Maduro again demanded the return of the state oil company CITGO from the US backed opposition.

From FRANCE- Eight South American nations met in Brazil for a summit to preserve the Amazon rainforest with divided results. The record breaking ocean temperatures are destroying the coral reefs off the coast of Florida.
From CUBA- Brazilian President Lula da Silva signed a decree buying hydroelectric power from Venezuela which Bolsonaro had canceled. Russia says that the peace conference Ukraine arranged in Saudi Arabia is intended to prolong the war and belittle other peace proposals already put forward by other states. Following Israeli attacks near Damascus, the Syrian foreign ministry accused Israel of being a tool to sow chaos and instability in the Middle East.
From JAPAN- People across Japan marked the anniversary of the US killing 70,000 people in Nagasaki from an atomic bomb in 1945- they called for the elimination of all nuclear weapons, and to cease using them as a threat. China condemned remarks by a former Japanese PM who said that Japanese readiness to fight for Taiwan will serve as a deterrent to war in the region. Japan has been hosting a series of military exercises with Italy, following similar operations with Germany, India, and France. Japan hopes to begin dumping Fukushima waste water into the Pacific Ocean before the middle of September, following talks with Biden next week.

From GERMANY- French President Macron visited the South Pacific to reestablish political influence in the region. The US announced a $345 million package of weapons including missiles and military trainers to Taiwan. UN Secretary-General Guterres said the era of global boiling has begun- the World Meteorological Organization representative to the UN explains.
From FRANCE- Russian President Putin hosted African leaders to a summit in Russia- they discussed the leaders proposal to end the war on Ukraine and support. Earth reached Overshoot Day on August 2nd, when humans have used up all the resources that the planet can regenerate in a complete year.
From JAPAN- Japan, like most countries in the Northern Hemisphere, broke all records for heat in July. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak granted more than a hundred new licenses for oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. The first new American nuclear power plant went online in Georgia, 7 years later and costing $17 billion more than expected. A Japanese power firm has met opposition to building a storage facility for spent fuel rods. At the UN Conference on Disarmament participants argued for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
From CUBA- Australian politicians are continuing their call for the release of Julian Assange. The US continues plans to auction off the Venezuelan state owned oil company CITGO to a US/Israel firm, Delek Holdings, with ties to Juan Guaido. Oliver Stone criticized the US involvement in the Ukraine war on a podcast with Russell Brand.
