From GERMANY- In Europe public opinion about the war in Ukraine showed only 1 in 10 believing that Ukraine can win the war with Russia and 41 percent want Europe to pressure Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. For the third time the US vetoes a UN security council resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. Recent figures from the committee to protect journalists found that 83 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 7th- Jody Ginsberg explains that this is the most journalists killed in any war over the past 30 years and that none of those journalists were militants.
From FRANCE- There have been 2 days of hearings in London on a request for an appeal to the extradition of Julian Assange to the US for espionage. There were large demonstrations and Julian's wife Stella, spoke to the crowds about the precedents that will be set allowing the criminalization of the free press. The US veto against the ceasefire in Gaza has left the US isolated for the third time, giving the green light to continue.
From JAPAN- At the Fukushima nuclear plant there have been more serious radioactive leaks to workers and the environment. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says his is committed to continuing the war until Hamas is completely eliminated leading to more protests by Israeli citizens. Brazilian President Lula da Silva compared Israeli actions to the Nazi regime.
From CUBA- Brazil has said it will not retract Lula da Silva comparing the Israeli attacks to the Holocaust. At the International Court of Justice an American lawyer spoke out against the history of Israel occupying Palestinian territory. An Israeli politician said on television that all Palestinians over the age of 4 should be subject to collective punishment to force them to dislike Hamas. A UN Human Rights official says they have received information that Palestinian women and children have been arbitrarily executed in Gaza. The Irish Foreign Minister says that the veto power in the UN Security Council has no place in the 21st century, as the US has done 3 times to prevent an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

From FRANCE- UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is continuing to push his plan to expel migrants to Rwanda despite the UK Supreme Court rejecting the idea.
From JAPAN- Japan has lost its place as the world's third largest economy. The severity of the New Years day earthquake in Central Japan has led to fine tuning evacuation plans around nuclear power plants. South Korea has restored ties with Cuba which had stopped with the 1959 Cuban revolution. Jose Borell, Foreign Policy Chief for the EU, says the death toll in Gaza should have Israeli allies rethinking their military support. Egypt and Turkey are working together to avert the catastrophe happening in Palestine.
From GERMANY- Last weekend Trump said that NATO countries that do not pay into it at the agreed amount will not be defended by the US- which has rekindled the idea of an EU military alliance and possible nuclear weapon proliferation. A few excerpts from the Putin interview by Tucker Carlson. Protests continue to swell in Israel against Netanyahu and the war in Palestine.

From GERMANY- The US, Germany, and a number of other nations are stopping support for UNRWA, the UN relief agency that supports Palestinian refugees because of allegations by Israel that 13 of their workers were involved in the October 7 massacre- Christopher Gunness the former spokesperson for UNRWA responds to the Israeli accusations. Then an interview from DW's weekly program the Conflict Zone with the former head of the Israeli foreign intelligence service, the Mossad. They discuss possible outcomes of the war in Palestine and the fact that Israel helped create and support Hamas as a counterweight to the Palestinian Authority. Israeli activists are blocking trucks attempting to deliver food and medical supplies to Palestine.
From CUBA- Republican Presidential candidate Nikki Haley has called for the assassination of Iranian leaders after drone strikes killed 3 US soldiers in Jordan. Incidents of hate and discrimination against Muslims and Palestinians in the US have increased dramatically.
From JAPAN- At the devastated Fukushima nuclear facility at least 5 1/2 tons of highly radioactive water has leaked out of a tank. Massive wildfires have swept across central Chile with at least 130 deaths. Toyota Motors announced it will start producing electric vehicles and batteries in Kentucky next year.

From FRANCE- First a Press Review on the farmers tractor blockades in many parts of France, Germany, and Brussels- farmers are protesting low pay, a reduction in fuel subsidies, imports of less expensive produce, and regulations to curb greenhouse gases. Then an interview with Oliver McTernan, Director of Forward Thinking, an organization promoting cross-cultural dialogue. He discusses the need for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine, and who is preventing it from happening. He says the judgement by the International Court of Justice is not being implemented, and that we are losing sight of the norms that were in place after the second world war.
From CUBA- UN Secretary-General Guterres and numerous aid agencies condemned the cessation of funds to UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, because Israel accused 12 of their workers of being involved in the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel- the agency funds 13,000 Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has jailed 6330 Palestinians since October 7. On Monday, Israel launched a missile attack on the outskirts of Damascus Syria.
From GERMANY- Record high temperatures in Colombia have resulted in hundreds of wildfires, some on the borders of Bogota. Large protests for an immediate release of all hostages and against Netanyahu in Israel have led to violent clashes with police.
From JAPAN- Some Israeli cabinet members say Israel should control Gaza and rebuild settlements after eliminating Hamas. Former pacifist Japan and Germany have signed an agreement to exchange military supplies. In Pakistan, former PM Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets.

From FRANCE- First a press review on a wide-ranging press call given by French President Macron- it included limits for students screen time, an experiment with compulsory uniforms for students, and language borrowed from the right-wing politicians. France 24 has a daily program called Perspective, and this one was an interview with Simon Shuster, a Ukrainian born Russian-American who is a senior correspondent at Time magazine. He has written a book called Showman- Inside the Invasion that Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky. He tracked and followed Zelensky since his days as comedian and TV producer, and how and why he demands that the war continue.
From JAPAN- As Japan moves away from its pacifist constitution it has reached a deal with the US to buy 400 Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. The military in the Philippines plans to build infrastructure on remote islands and reefs in the South China Sea for supplies, troops, and ships. Iran has launched retaliatory missile strikes against an Israeli Mossad military base in Iraq, in response to Israeli missiles killing an Iranian military leader in Syria last month. Pakistan and Iran have carried out series of military strikes on each other, raising concern of further war in the region.
From CUBA- UN experts have taken Germany to task for defending war and genocide, charges leveled against Israel by South Africa at the International Court of Justice. A Palestinian shopkeeper showed Reuters a video of Israeli troops using him as a human shield in the West Bank. A UN expert accused the Israeli regime of displacing civilians en masse to permanently alter the Gaza population. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Oxfam reported that the five richest men in the world have more than doubled their fortunes since 2020.

Then an interview with Professor Karim Bitar, an associate research Fellow at the Middle East Institute, on hope in the war on Gaza and the risk of fighting to spread into Lebanon and the entire region.
From CUBA- The UN Emergency Relief Chief says Gaza has become a place of death and despair, with the levels of food insecurity the highest ever recorded. Activists around the world have signed up to a global day of action on Saturday January 13th, demanding a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Then a Viewpoint on Ecuador which has become the most violent country in Latin America, and where 27% of the population live in poverty.

From JAPAN- Japan experienced a powerful earthquake, 7.6 on the Richter scale, which deformed the earth crust by 3 meters, collapsed many buildings and blocked many roads. An offline nuclear power plant sustained damage but reportedly not releasing any of the spent radioactive material stored there. Russia and Ukraine have increased bombing in each others countries.
From CUBA- In Mexico the Zapatistas had a celebration on the 30th anniversary of their uprising in 1994. At the 15th meeting of the BRICS group officially added 6 new countries to the roster and focused on using currencies other than the US dollar. Israel has destroyed 70% of the homes and 200 historical sites in Gaza. The Israeli finance minister has called for Palestinians to leave Gaza so Israelis could make the desert bloom.
From GERMANY- As countries in the global south suffer under intense heat, a leader in the Royal Meteorological Society talks about evidence of climate change in 2023. The Israeli defense minister says his country is facing a war on 7 fronts, while denying attacks in Syria, Lebanon, and Iran- these attacks are seen by some as a provocation to spread the war beyond Gaza and throughout the entire region.
From FRANCE- More on the bombings in Iran at a ceremony honoring a slain Iranian General assassinated by the US in Iraq 4 years ago. A brief history of the 2300 targeted assassinations carried out by Israel over the past 50 years. South Africa is taking Israel to the International Court of Justice, alleging violations of the genocide convention.

From JAPAN- Japan is supplying the US with interceptor missiles, after a change in Japanese law allowing the export of weapons. The Taiwan army conducted its first small arms drill outside military bases. The prefecture of Okinawa is not following the central government plan to build a new US marine base to an offshore site.
From FRANCE- On the first of the year markets in France will no longer wrap fresh fruits and vegetables in single-use plastic. Israeli troop attacks in Gaza continue while the WHO says 25% of Gazans are starving.
From GERMANY- The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to boost aid distribution in Gaza after days of delays by the US- a former UN Rapporteur for Human Rights analyzes the watered down resolution, and points out the civilian death toll in Gaza is the highest per day since the Vietnam War. An interview with Samah Hadid from the Norwegian Refugee Council on why a ceasefire is crucial to allow food and supplies to be distributed. An interview with Dr. Margaret Harris from the WHO on the horrific health situation in Gaza.
From CUBA- The WHO denounced the Israeli bombing of refugee camps in Gaza. Israel continues to accuse the UN of bias against Israel, while the UN reports that more of their workers have been killed in the war than any prior war. Hamas urged a probe into summary executions carried out by Israeli forces in Gaza.

From GERMANY- As a result of record numbers of immigrants since 2015, members of the EU have agreed on sweeping reforms on the displaced and asylum seekers. It will be significantly harder to find refuge, welfare and health services will be denied to the undocumented, and deportation will be simplified. The agreement is very divisive both within and between countries.
From FRANCE- A press review on the French government passing its own controversial immigration reform bill as well which the far right National Party saw as an ideological victory. Many in the left are appalled at President Macron for supporting the changes. Then press reviews on the murder of surrendering Israeli hostages by Israeli troops. At a Hanukah celebration President Biden stated that he did not trust the casualty figures in Gaza as reported by the health authorities in Gaza- Airwars is a non-profit organization that compiles independent data on the death toll in wars- they found that the deaths reported by Hamas were accurate and on a scale that they have not seen in any conflicts in the past 20 years.
From GOING UNDERGROUND- An excerpted interview with Dennis Kucinich by Afshin Rattansi on his program Going Underground. They discuss the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, funded by US taxpayers and supported by a strong majority of both US political parties. Also the US veto of ceasefire resolutions at the UN and Netanyahu's plan to fully destroy and occupy the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He says that the US has lost its moral authority in world opinion by funding the wars in Palestine and Ukraine.
