From FRANCE- After French voters rejected President Macron's Renaissance party in EU Parliamentary elections he called for snap elections for the French Parliament. Last weekend, the first part of the election, saw a stunning victory for the far-right party, the National Rally led by Marie Le Pen. This coming weekend round two will take place and many believe that the National Rally will control Parliament. To prevent this from happening there were calls for 200 positions to be abandoned so as not to split the liberal vote. Today's French stories are all press reviews in order, from Monday through Thursday. The first 6 are about the French election. Then a press review about the far right youth party in Italy. Finally a press review about the first African born member of the Bundestag, the German national parliament, who is stepping down after serious racist threats to his life.
From GERMANY- The Israeli military has given an evacuation order to about a quarter of a million Palestinians who are already displaced in the ruins in Gaza. The Netherlands has spent 7 months trying to put a new coalition government in place. It is strongly right wing, with the goals of limiting immigration and European Union environmental restrictions. An analysis on how this shift will affect life in the Netherlands, and the possible coalitions between the various far right parties within the European Union itself.
From CUBA- The Washington Post ran an article claiming that China has set up listening stations in Cuba, as well as a Chinese spy base on the island- Cuba says it is disinformation. The Netherlands has summoned the Israeli ambassador over allegations of spying on members of the International Criminal Court. Israeli forces have killed over 8500 students in Palestine, along with destroying hundreds of educational institutions in Gaza. The EU has condemned an announcement by the Israeli Finance Minister to legalize 5 new outpost settlements in the occupied West Bank.

This week's show begins with an analysis of the plea deal Julian Assange was required to accept, a proposal to create a minimum tax on the world's 3000 richest people, elections in France and the UK, and the UN Secretary-General speaks out against the expanding war in Lebanon.
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche-Welle, France 24, and Radio Havana Cuba.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240628.mp3 (29:00)
From GERMANY- Julian Assange has been released from a high-security prison in England, made to plead guilty to a single count of espionage, and returned home to Australia. Jameel Jaffer is the executive director of the Knights First Amendment Institute, at Columbia University. He describes the deal that Julian had to agree to for his release. Jameel points out that the ruling will be used as a precedent in cases where a government wants to punish journalists for revealing information that they wish to keep secret- something reporters do frequently. Jameel says that a free press needs to solicit information that can inform the populace of disinformation in, for example, press releases. And journalists do it all the time to the benefit of the public. Jameel says that he worries how future administrations will use the guilty plea to control journalists, human rights defenders, and whistleblowers.
From FRANCE- There is a proposal for a 2% minimum tax that would apply to about 3000 of the worlds richest people- the purpose is to balance out the fact that a great many of the wealthiest pay zero or close to zero in taxes because of shell companies and untaxed corporate stocks. The world is full of elections- in the UK Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer debated over tax cuts and dealing with immigration- Labour is expected to win easily ending 14 years of Conservative rule. France is facing snap elections for Parliament this week and next which will determine the Prime Minister who will serve under President Macron- according to latest polls the far-right National Rally is expected to win. Valerie deKamp discusses the environmental threat of a far-right victory in the current election.
From CUBA- The aid group Save The Children released statistics about the plight of Palestinian children under siege in Gaza from Israel. Israel is using internationally banned white phosphorous as a weapon in Lebanon, supplied by the US. UN Secretary-General Guterres spoke out against Israel expanding its war into Lebanon, as it could precipitate a much larger regional war.

“The scariest thing for non-Jewish Americans in talking about Palestinian self-determination is the fear of being or sounding anti-Semitic. The people of Israel are suffering, and Jewish people have a long history of oppression. We still have some responsibility for that, but I think it's important to draw a firm distinction between the policies of Israel, as a state, and Jewish people. That's kind of a no-brainer, but there is very strong pressure to conflate the two.”

This week's show has an in-depth interview with a US Sate Department senior official who resigned because of weapon sales to Israel. The State Dept announced Monday that US weapons were used by the Israeli Defense Force in gross violations of human rights. The US Leahy law prohibits the sale of weapons where they are used in such violations, like the murder of Palestinian-American press reporter Sharin Abu Akleh in May of 2022. There is a debate at The Paris Institute of Political Studies in hopes of lessening forceful student uprisings in France. Israel says they are opening the northern Erez border crossing for supplies to Palestinians- Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council describes the real needs in Gaza. A report on why US youth are disillusioned with the Presidential election.
This week's show features stories from France 24 and Radio Deutsche-Welle.
http://youthspeaksout.net/swr240503.mp3 (29:00)
From FRANCE- France has a weekly interview show called tete a tete which goes in depth on a subject. The host Marc Perelman interviewed Josh Paul who served for 11 years in the US State Department overseeing weapons sales to foreign countries. He resigned in October to protest sales to Israel as the war on Gaza raced ahead. The State Dept announced Monday that US weapons were used by 5 units of the Israeli Defense Force in gross violations of human rights. The US Leahy law prohibits the sale of weapons where they are used in such violations, like the murder of Palestinian-American press reporter Sharin Abu Akleh in May of 2022. All of these named violations occurred well before the October 7thinvasion of Gaza. No US administration has ever curbed arm sales to Israel despite it being against US law. Josh says there is a culture of fear in the State Dept, and that the campus protests are a response to concerns over the war just being brushed aside by government officials. Europe has seen protests about the Israeli war on Palestine as well and there is a debate as I write this at The Paris Institute of Political Studies in hopes of lessening forceful student uprisings in France.
From GERMANY- Israel says they are opening the northern Erez border crossing for supplies to Palestinians- Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council describes the real needs in Gaza. Netanyahu has told Blinken that he will not accept any notions of a permanent ceasefire and will invade Rafah. Then a report on why US youth are disillusioned with the Presidential election.
