From FRANCE 24-- French citizens continued their sixth day of massive protests against Macron's pension reform. A press review on the UK's proposed anti-immigration law which has led to calls for the firing of a long time BBC broadcaster, who had compared the government action to Germany in the 1930s.
From RADIO HAVANA CUBA-- UN Secretary General Guterres condemned rich countries and energy giants for holding back the development of countries living in poverty. Syria is angered over a recent unannounced visit by US Army general Mark Milley to a US military base in the northeast of the country. Doctors Without Borders is planning to suspend operations in Haiti because of recent gang shootings. The weekend before last saw large anti-war protests in many major European capitals demanding an end to the Ukraine war and supplying weapons to Kiev.
From JAPAN- A new survey of Japanese citizens says that more want an expansion of Self Defense Forces. The new Chinese Foreign Minister lashed out at US involvement with Taiwan, calling it containment and suppression- he also said China has no plans to provide weapons to Russia in its war on Ukraine. The head of the IAEA said that Iran has not produced weapons grade enriched uranium. The number of suspected poisonings of Iranian school girls is growing, and it is unclear who is responsible for the acts. Investigators in Germany believe they may be closer to understanding who bombed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline last September.
From GERMANY- More details on the German investigation into who bombed the Nord Stream pipeline. Mauritania, on the coast of northwest Africa, agreed to begin producing hydrogen using solar panels and wind energy for Germany, the UAE, and Egypt.

This week's show features excerpts from an interview with Seymour Hersh about the bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline, Edward Snowden and more, formerly pacifist Japan plans to buy 400 cruise missiles from the US, and the G20 summit was a very divided affair. With reports from Going Underground and NHK Japan.
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin just interviewed Seymour Hersh about who blew up the Nord Stream pipeline, cutting off gas supplies to Germany and causing the price of fuel to skyrocket globally. Hersh who revealed the My Lai massacre in 1970, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. His distinguished career includes articles on Henry Kissinger, and US torture and secret prisons in the Iraq war. In this interview Hersh explains how the US government detonated the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last September, and the motives behind the attack. He also speaks about the initial rejection of his report on the My Lai massacre, of being accused of being a conspiracy theorist, and Edward Snowden.
From JAPAN- Japan announced plans to purchase 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US. As Russia continues its war on Ukraine it claimed the US was planning a false flag operation with toxic materials, which the US says is disinformation. Foreign Ministers of the G20 nations met in India, did not find common ground, and did not conclude with a joint statement. The FBI director told Fox News that the novel Corona virus was probably leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan China.

This Week's show starts with meetings between Japan and China, China and Russia, and the speeches by Biden and Putin, an interview on how the ultra-wealthy have reshaped the global discussion on climate change, and Mexican President Obrador nationalizes all lithium deposits in his country. From JAPAN- Top officials from Japan and China met to discuss security issues, with both sides making accusations of spying and military build ups. The top Chinese diplomat met in Russia with a close aide of Putin, with the goal of reaffirming the strength of their ties. Putin held talks with China's top diplomat, agreeing that their partnership is not directed against another country. Putin then gave a State of the Nation speech, blaming the West for the war in Ukraine and suspending the START arms treaty.
From FRANCE- An analysis and discussion about the dueling speeches delivered by Joe Biden and Putin on the anniversary of the start of the war on Ukraine. Then, from a weekly program called Perspective, an interview with political scientist Edouard Morena on how the ultra-wealthy have reshaped the global discussion on climate change.
From CUBA- Brazilian President Lula da Silva visited and offered aid to areas hit by intense rains causing floods and landslides- it rained 24 inches in under 8 hours. Mexican President Obrador signed a decree declaring that lithium is the property of the nation and its exploitation controlled by the government. In Peru, clashes between government forces and citizens demanding the resignation of the appointed President, the closure of Congress, and new elections. Lebanon condemned the latest Israeli bombing in Syria which damaged residences and killed civilians in Damascus.

From GERMANY- In Italy, a court has acquitted Silvio Berlusconi of bribing witnesses in a sex-scandal trial from 2013. Nicola Sturgeon announced her resignation as the Scottish first minister. There is a controversy in the European Commission over whether to call hydrogen derived from nuclear power plants renewable energy- many electric vehicles will soon run on hydrogen fuel cells.
From JAPAN- The nuclear power industry in Japan is hiring with plans to expand in the next 2 years. A report on the balloons attacked in US airspace, including a Chinese government response and a proposed change in Japanese military limitations. The environmental catastrophe in Pakistan continues more than 6 months after flooding caused by a changing climate. Tax officials in India searched the offices of the BBC after a documentary critical of Prime Minister Modi led to a ban in the country.
From CUBA- The UN Human Rights Commissioner recommended a special police force be sent to Haiti to control gangs who are killing, raping and stealing. 4 men in Florida were arrested and charged with conspiracy in the assassination of former Haitian President Moise in 2021. Barcelona has temporarily broken ties with Israel over its policy toward Palestinians. A panel at the UN has called on the international community to take action to stop systematic housing demolition and forced evictions in Palestine. As many as 5 million Syrians are homeless following the earthquake.
From FRANCE- In France large protests and strikes continue over government plans to change their pensions. In the face of continuing nationwide protests, the Israeli President Herzog appealed to PM Netanyahu to suspend plans to reform the judiciary. A press review on the work of an organization called Forbidden Stories which reports on attacked journalists.

From FRANCE- In the UK there are ongoing large walkouts led by nurses for the NHS and ambulance staff, the biggest in the NHS history. In France, 400K citizens took part in a general strike in Paris, mainly over proposed pension reforms. A press review on Ukrainian President Zelensky asked for jet fighters in Paris and London.
From CUBA- The imprisoned former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, gave an interview to a newspaper describing the hatred and threats against him and his family since he was elected. Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro has applied for a 6 month tourist visa to stay in the US. 11,000 Nigerians have sued Shell Oil for compensation over devastating oil spills.
From GERMANY- Oil companies have made record profits stimulated by the war in Ukraine, while investing almost nothing in renewable energy projects. Parts of Syria, like Turkey, have been demolished by earthquakes, but equipment and aid to the areas have been held up by sanctions and no media focus. The Russian defense minister said that western weapons to Ukraine will continue to escalate the war.

From JAPAN- Japan and NATO have agreed to raise cooperation to "maintain a free and open international order." In Pakistan a suicide bomber killed over 100 people in a mosque mainly occupied by police who were the intended victims. A military facility in Iran was attacked by 3 drones which US officials attributed to Israel.
From GOING UNDERGROUND- Afshin spoke with Noam Chomsky, famed American linguist and scholar. In this excerpt Noam discusses current examples of manufacturing consent in regard to the wars in Iraq and Ukraine. He goes on to use the undersea bombing of the Nord Stream pipeline, delivering gas from Russia to Germany- pointing out that the main stream media accused Russia of the explosion and then not investigating the evidence. He goes on to explain why Europe is now in the pocket of the US, much to their own detriment.
From GERMANY- German Chancellor Scholz traveled to meet with Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Scholz asked Lula to provide ammunition for the tanks Germany is sending to Ukraine and Lula refused, saying that he would be willing to negotiate peace in that region along with Chinese President Xi.
From CUBA- An update on the continuing massive protests in Peru, including polls with show overwhelming popular support for fresh elections this year. Israeli forces continue killing Palestinians in the West Bank, and plans were announced to supply firearms to Israeli citizens.

From GEORGE GALLOWAY- George spoke with American journalist Chris Hedges about the impact the German and American tanks will make in the war in Ukraine. Chris says that more weapons will not resolve the devastation in Ukraine, but will serve the US military industrial complex . He says that endless war has become the primary business of the American empire, and that the few politicians who speak out against the war industry are erased, like Dennis Kucinich. George and Chris both complain that anyone who tries to oppose the current wars will be cancelled.
From FRANCE- First some international press reviews on the agreement to send US and German tanks to Ukraine. NGOs in Ukraine are calling for the firing of the Defense Minister whose office is accused of signing a contract to overpay $200 million for food for the armed forces. In Peru, after scores of civilians protesting the replacement president have been murdered by police and military, the OAS (the Organization of American States) has given the president its full support. CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) is meeting in Argentina.
From CUBA- At the CELAC summit Colombian President Petro spoke to the integration of projects among the member states, and work together like the EU. Venezuelan President Maduro called on the other nations to join against foreign intervention. There is an international call to release 5 water defenders in El Salvador. Canada announced it will pay more than $2 billion Canadian to settle a lawsuit over indigenous residential schools. Large protests against Netanyahu in Israel continue.

From FRANCE- In the French press there has been a controversial push to begin building new nuclear reactors. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, 200 millionaires signed an open letter to world leaders saying that the extreme wealth gap and growing poverty could be in part remedied by taxing the ultra rich. An Oxfam spokesperson describes the need for politicians to act now.
From GERMANY- Also at Davos, the charity Oxfam presented a report called Survival of the Richest, explaining the shift in global wealth, and the expansion of absolute poverty around the globe. A series of reports on the protests against coal mining in Luetzerath, Germany. Over the weekend over 35,000 citizens moved into the area and, after several days, police began chasing and beating them, sending scores to hospitals with serious injuries. Protests are also occurring in Davos where Greta Thunberg and other activists spoke out against fossil fuel expansion.
From CUBA- In Peru, despite a declared state of emergency, the protests demanding a fresh election continue. Over 100K Israelis marched in major cities in opposition to Netanyahu and the far right power hold in the country. The UK is rewriting laws which will allow police to stop protests before they get started and using guerrilla tactics like glue. In Brazil, the former Minister of Justice under Bolsonaro was arrested upon his return from Florida where he went with the former president.
From JAPAN- China accused the US and Japan of hyping up the nuclear threat from China. The governor of Fukushima is on a public relations tour of the US as preparations are finalized to release radioactively contaminated waste water into the Pacific Ocean. Putin spoke by phone to Erdogan of Turkey who wants to mediate peace talks with Ukraine.

From FRANCE- French President Macron has announced an unpopular plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64- how does this compare to other European nations, and general strikes have already been announced. In Peru the military and police have continued murdering citizens protesting the Congress which ousted President Castillo- a review of the Peruvian press. Then a review of the Brazilian and international press on the aftermath of the storming of the government buildings. Young Israelis are protesting in the streets against Netanyahu and his right wing government.
From GERMANY- It has been announced that the head of one of the world's largest oil companies will be the president of this year's UN climate talks, COP28. In Luetzerath Germany Police are forcibly removing hundreds of climate activists attempting to prevent the enlargement of a coal mining operation.
From CUBA- Daniel Ortega, President of Nicaragua, has warned about the expansion of fascism in various parts of the world, most recently Brazil. There were large pro-democratic demonstrations in many parts of Brazil, in opposition to the Bolsonarista insurrection.
From JAPAN- Japan is in its 8th wave of Covid infections, with more than 10,000 deaths in the past month. Japan and the UK have signed a military pact that Britain called the most significant agreement between them in a century. Japan and the US say they are reorganizing and expanding their military cooperation. South Korea will be holding nuclear war simulations with the US.

In today’s edition you’ll hear reports from RDW, RHC, and NHK Japan.
We will begin with Germany’s RDW. 2022 was the hottest year on record in the UK. Many European countries are reporting record high January temperatures, and DW did a series of stories as a forecast for what may be coming. Starting with a review of 2022, pointing out the human effect on various weather events and efforts to limit the carbon emissions. The number of people demonstrating for direct environmental action has risen in Europe. The warming in Central Europe has resulted in almost no snow in the mountains. The US State department joined others in criticizing a provocative visit by a far right Israeli minister to one of Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious sites, while the government unveiled a plan to weaken the powers of the Israeli Supreme Court.
