The Shortwave Report Saturday 6pm This week's show begins with this weekend's election in Taiwan, several perspectives on the war in Gaza, will the war move into Lebanon, and what is behind the violence in Ecuador.

From JAPAN- An update on the terrible New Years day earthquake that affected central Japan. Taiwan has an important Presidential election this weekend. A group of Jewish Americans staged a surprise protest at the UN headquarters in New York.
From FRANCE- An update on the war in Gaza with Shaina Low from the Norwegian Refugee Council- she describes the worsening scene in Gaza, the possible expulsion of Palestinians from their country, and what citizens in other countries can do. Then an interview with Professor Karim Bitar, an associate research Fellow at the Middle East Institute, on hope in the war on Gaza and the risk of fighting to spread into Lebanon and the entire region.
From CUBA- The UN Emergency Relief Chief says Gaza has become a place of death and despair, with the levels of food insecurity the highest ever recorded. Activists around the world have signed up to a global day of action on Saturday January 13th, demanding a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Then a Viewpoint on Ecuador which has become the most violent country in Latin America, and where 27% of the population live in poverty.
